The Sigel Alps
The Sigel Alp exists: It is a beautiful large meadow on a high plateau within the Alpstein, a mountain range in the east of Switzerland. For seven months a year the prairie is snow-covered. But early in summer a violent explosion of small alpine flowers takes place. In just a few days the once dull area bursts with colours. When I went there for my first summer hike I was speechless seeing this sudden radiant abundance of colours.
It seemed like an LSD flash. Moreover, the tiny flowers of different sorts grouped together in what seemed like a strangely ordered rhythm. As soon as I got back I started to work on this painting as is the case when I am, time and again, struck by the recurring Harmony that we find in nature.
Unsquare Dance - Homage to Dave Brubeck

The odd beat percussions on the Jazz Musician Dave Brubeck Quartet's album Time Out were inspired by the sound of machines. I am a great fan of Brubeck's music: I admire the way he created an elegant harmony and a cool melodious and playful sound out of odd beat movements. Trying to express my feelings when I listen to the harmony in his music, I designed a dance of elements that pretend be to squares but are not. A strangely odd, rugged, but lively and joyful rhythm emerged.
